Admissions

SMART Multi Academy Trust is committed to the Department for Education's School Admissions Code. As part of the Code, we consult on admissions arrangements whenever there is a change which requires consultation, and at least once every seven years even if there is no change.

Whilst there is no proposed change to the criteria used for determining admissions to Smart schools, the proposed Admissions Policy for Smart's Newcastle schools includes reducing the Published Admission Number for Reception pupils starting at Kenton Bar Primary in the 2026-2027 academic year from 60 to 30. This proposal means that there would be 30 places available for pupils being admitted into Reception at Kenton Bar Primary School in September 2026.

In addition, the proposed Admissions Policy also includes increase in the Published Admission Number at Kingston Park Primary in the 2026-2027 academic year from 60 to 90: this is part of the planning to provide public services and amenities for the housing development north of Kingston Park. This proposal means that there would be 90 pupils admitted into Reception at Kingston Park Primary School in September 2026.

We would love to hear your views on our proposed Admissions Policy 2026-2027, which can be read here:  Admissions Consultation | Smart Multi Academy Trust.

Once you have read it, please contact us with any comments by emailing  admissionsconsultation@smartacademies.net

The consultation will run from 25 October 2024 to 16 December 2024, at which point we will review the policy in the light of the consultation.

If you would like your child to attend our school, please see full details of our admission arrangements below.

Nursery Admissions

Admissions to the Nursery class are dealt with by the school. Forms can be downloaded (see below) or obtained from the school office. Completed forms need to be returned to the school office or emailed to admin.saps@smartacademies.net along with the relevant documentation required. Admission to nursery does not guarantee a place in our reception classes.

Appeals timetable

Timetable for reception or transfer places in middle, secondary and high schools

For reception or transfer appeals for places in September, you will have at least 20 school days to submit an appeal from the day you received notice that your application was unsuccessful.

The deadlines for submitting an appeal in order to ensure that it is heard before the end of the summer term are:

  • Transfer place -  31 March 2025
  • Reception place - 2 June 2025

Appeals submitted within the deadlines will be heard within 40 school days of these dates. You can submit an appeal after these dates but it may not be possible to hear your case until after the summer holiday. Then it will be considered after the panel has already heard any appeals which were submitted within deadline.

Where possible appeals arising from late applications will be heard within 40 school days of this deadline or within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.

Appeals submitted after the deadline will be heard within 40 school days of receipt where possible.

In year transfers

An in year admission is when a parent wishes to apply for a place at a school outside of the usual admission date at the start of the academic year.  This can be because the child is moving to a different address or is new to the country or can be for other reasons.  These moves usually take place during the academic year, which is why they are referred to as “in year” admissions.

Newcastle City Council co-ordinates the application process.  For further information and the online application form, please follow the link below:
