Design & technology

The intent of our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum at Stocksfield Avenue Primary School is to foster creative thinking, problem-solving, and technological proficiency among our pupils. We aim to instill in them a sense of curiosity, resilience, and resourcefulness, while developing their design capabilities and technological skills. Our overarching intent is to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate a rapidly evolving world and meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our DT curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all children, regardless of their background or ability.

We aim to achieve this through the following curriculum drivers and golden threads:

Aspiration: We encourage pupils to set high standards for themselves and aim for excellence in their design and technology projects. By exposing them to a range of career possibilities and role models in the field of design and technology, we aim to inspire them to pursue their ambitions with confidence and determination.

Creativity: Our DT curriculum places a strong emphasis on creativity, encouraging pupils to think innovatively and develop original ideas. Through hands-on projects and open-ended tasks, we nurture their ability to generate creative solutions and express their unique perspectives.

Oracy: Effective communication is a key component of our DT curriculum. We encourage pupils to discuss their ideas, present their projects, and provide constructive feedback to their peers. This helps them develop their speaking and listening skills, which are essential for collaborative work and future success.

Vocabulary: We focus on expanding pupils' technical vocabulary related to design and technology. By learning specific terms and concepts, pupils can articulate their ideas more precisely and deepen their understanding of the subject.

The four main areas covered in DT are:

  • Cooking and Nutrition
  • Construction
  • Mechanisms
  • Textiles

Within each area, the children will go through three stages of the design process:

  • Design
  • Make
  • Evaluate

The children will then produce a final product after taking part in the full design process. Through this structured approach, we aim to develop their skills systematically, ensuring they gain confidence and competence in each aspect of design and technology.
