Maths

At Stocksfield Avenue Primary School, our aim is to cultivate a positive and enriching experience of mathematics for all children.  We intend to provide a mathematics curriculum that allows all pupils to become inquisitive, independent and confident mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world.

We believe in the importance of instilling confidence and competence across all key areas of mathematics. Our approach emphasises a balanced development of conceptual understanding alongside procedural and factual fluency, thus fostering arithmetic proficiency and the ability to tackle mathematical challenges in various contexts. This allows pupils the opportunity to explore, reason and investigate using a variety of resources that meet the needs of individual pupils and offer a challenge for all. For example, this could include number lines, part-whole models, abstract calculations and reasoning questions as well as using manipulatives.

A maths mastery approach is followed within teaching and learning. Our mastery approach to mathematical development is consistent in approach and ensures that children build upon core knowledge and skills effectively and in logical sequence. Our long-term planning is underpinned by White Rose Maths scheme which provides a structured spine of learning throughout school, but teaching is carefully adapted and supplemented with resources such as NCETM curriculum prioritisation materials. Our bespoke learning offer is regularly reviewed through the analysis of pupil performance data, ongoing teacher assessment and pupil voice activities to ensure that our curriculum provides challenge and support for all pupils.

Oracy is a key element of our maths, and pupils are encouraged to have quality mathematical discussions using accurate mathematical vocabulary, and stem sentences to reason and explain their learning.  By encouraging quality mathematical discussions and providing structured prompts, pupils build a deeper understanding and greater confidence in their mathematical abilities.  Pupils demonstrate their understanding through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations of number. Our carefully sequenced curriculum is designed to ensure that children become fluent in calculation methods in order that they can apply their learning to varied fluency and reasoning activities. Learning is linked to real life problems that resonate with pupils and allow them to see how maths applies to their everyday lives.

In addition to daily mathematics lessons, dedicated fluency sessions such as 10 a Day, Times Table Rock Stars, and Mastering Number are delivered by teachers, further reinforcing core mathematical skills and understanding across different year groups.
