Music

At Stocksfield Avenue Primary School, we value music and performing arts as an important part of the broad and balanced curriculum that we offer our children. Music and the performing arts provide children with the opportunities to be expressive and creative and to explore their feelings through organic musical experiences. Our aims within music are to enable children to become proficient in singing, listening, composing, and performing a variety of different instruments. They will learn about the development of music; how different sounds are made; great influential artists; and understand the historical and cultural development of music.

Every class in KS1 and 2 has a weekly music lesson with a specialist music teacher, and music is embedded into the EYFS curriculum. We have access to a wide range of instruments including keyboards, ukuleles, steel pans, drums, recorders, glockenspiels, and tuned and untuned percussion. This enables us to provide a high-quality musical experience for every child in the school. The music curriculum is taught in half-termly topics; some are linked to the topics they are covering in the wider curriculum. Each half-term will have specific focusses from the curriculum, ensuring all elements are covered across the school year. Children in EYFS work within their expressive arts framework to develop basic rhythm, composition, listening, and singing skills. All children in KS1 are then encouraged to explore a variety of musical genres through listening, singing, and composing. Progressing into KS2, the children will expand their performing, composing, and listening abilities. They will develop skills to use and understand musical notation, look at the history of music, and appreciate context when listening.

Through fun and engaging music lessons, our children show a positive attitude towards their learning in this subject and talk with excitement about the pieces they have created and performed. The supportive and safe environment established in school allows the children to approach music lessons with confidence, determination and the knowledge that they can achieve the end goal and be part of something special.

The musical talents of all our pupils are showcased in the many performances we do across the school year including internal events, across the trust and within the wider community. These include instrumental showcases, musicals, talent shows, and whole school and trust festivals.

As a school, we are proud of our children and how they all grow to become well-educated, well-rounded and confident musicians.  It is our belief that ‘music education should not be a privilege for a lucky few, it should be a part of every child's world of possibility’.
