PSHE

At Stocksfield Avenue Primary School, our intent is to build a comprehensive and carefully planned Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) curriculum that ensures consistency in the progression of skills and acquisition of knowledge. The importance of a robust PSHE curriculum for pupils cannot be overstated, as it equips them with essential life skills, promotes their well-being, and prepares them for future challenges. Our curriculum is underpinned by the PSHE Association, ensuring it meets the highest standards of educational practice.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), PSHE is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives are drawn from the Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) statements of the Early Learning Goals, fostering an inspiring and engaging environment for young learners. This early foundation is crucial for their overall development and sets the stage for future learning.

We show clear progression across Key Stage 1 and 2 within the PSHE core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. Each phase builds on the vocabulary, knowledge, and skills previously taught, ensuring a seamless transition and deeper understanding. Oracy is a key element in our PSHE lessons, allowing children to articulate their thoughts, experiences, and feelings in an inclusive and safe environment. This focus on oracy enhances their communication skills, supports their ability to access the wider curriculum, and fosters collaborative work and positive contributions to school life and the local community.

Our PSHE curriculum also includes age-appropriate relationship and sex education as outlined in statutory guidance. This ensures that all children understand and develop healthy relationships, stay safe, and are prepared for the complexities of future relationships and life experiences.

A key component of our curriculum is the "No Outsiders" program, which promotes diversity and inclusion. This program helps children understand and celebrate differences, fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome and respected. Further information on the "No Outsiders program can be found using the link below.

Our assemblies also play a crucial role in supporting the PSHE curriculum. These gatherings are designed to reinforce the key themes of our PSHE program, including Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. Through carefully planned and engaging assemblies, we provide students with additional opportunities to reflect on important life skills and values in a communal setting. We enhance students' understanding of the curriculum and provide a consistent message about the importance of personal development, social responsibility, and emotional well-being. These assemblies also offer a platform for pupils to practice oracy skills by sharing their thoughts and experiences in front of their peers, thus supporting their overall communication abilities.

When children leave Stocksfield Avenue Primary School, our goal is for them to possess the knowledge, understanding, and emotional resilience to play an active, positive, and successful role in today’s diverse society. We aim for our children to have high aspirations and a strong belief in themselves. Our curriculum prepares them to be global citizens, ready for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they will encounter in later life. Emphasizing diversity and inclusivity, our PSHE program nurtures respect and understanding, essential qualities for thriving in a multicultural world.
